THE NUMBERS OF FATAL AND SERIOUS INJURIES of offshore oil and gas workers remain "a cause for concern", Tat Powell, Head of the Health And Safety Executive's Offshore Division, said at this September's Offshore Europe Conference and Exhibition in Aberdeen. Powell called for improvements on the UK Continental Shelf - improvements were "slower" than those in the industry in some other parts of the world - and said serious injuries remained at a high level despite Step Change In Safety, an initiative to improve health and safety in the offshore industry launched by employer and workforce representatives in September 1997. A fatal accident was reported in May this year.
