摘要

NEW FIGURES showing that workplace deaths fell by 10 percent last year have received a cautious welcome from the Health and Safety Commission. In 2002-03, 226 people were killed at work, 25 fewer than the previous year and the second consecutive year in which fatal injuries have fallen. It is the lowest rate recorded, and part of an overall downward trend stretching back 20 years, when around 3 times as many workers were killed. The HSC's Chair, Bill Callaghan, commented: 'The accident statistics give us some grounds for optimism -- but no room for complacency. It is an encouraging sign that we are heading in the right direction on reducing deaths at work and major injuries."
