Reduce costs for safer firms, TUC urges insurers

INSURANCE companies should offer lower employers' liability premiums to firms with accredited health and safety practices, says a report by the TUC. It claims that a scheme launched nearly 2 years ago by the Association of British Insurers to benefit firms with good safety records has been largely ignored by insurers. TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said such firms should be "rewarded". But Nick Starling, ABI's director of general insurance, says the Office of Fair Trading has recognised steps the industry is taking to help stabilise the liability markets. He added: "However, to achieve long-term stability we must reduce the level of legal and other transactional costs, and improve access to rehabilitation.
