WHEN I was an expectant mum was fortunate to have a family-friendly employer who let me arrange my work around ante-natal appointments and gave me extended leave as a new mum. However, employers' responsibilities go beyond time off and maternity pay -- additional risk assessments may be required and risk management measures taken as a result. As an employee, or as the friend or spouse of an employee expecting a child or with a new baby, you may find it useful to know about entitlements and potential hazards to mother and child.The Maternity Alliance is a national charity dedicated to the interests of pregnant women, new parents and their babies. Its website (found at www.maternityailiance.org.uk) covers most of the basic information on rights at work, including a useful table showing how a woman's rights to maternity pay differ depending on how long she has been in the job at the time she becomes pregnant and on how much she earns. Advice is also provided on what a woman should do if she feels her rights are not being met at work.
