Five firms fined 128000 pounds over asbestos contamination

Five companies have together been fined 128000 pounds after a motorway service station was contaminated with asbestos. The companies admitted 10 charges in total under the Health at Safety at Work etc Act 1974, Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 1987 and Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994. Stat-ford Crown Court heard that Moto Hospitality Ltd, formerly Granada Hospitality, knew asbestos was present at its northbound Hilton Park service station, on the M6 near Wolverhampton, following a survey. But when it hired Simons Construction Ltd and KMB Ltd to carry out refurbishments, it failed to mention the material. Moto appointed Simons as principal contractor and KMB as planning supervisor only a week before work commenced, leaving little time to prepare work plans. They produced standard plans and risk assessments and made no enquires about asbestos. Simons failed to send copies to Moto, which made no attempt to check the plans.
