THE GOVERNMENT faces "a specific problem" in tackling law reform and effectively holding corporations to account for corporate killing, Baroness Scotland, the Home Office Minister, told a conference organised by the Centre for Corporate Accountability (CCA). Due to set out the current position in relation to the manifesto commitment to reform the law of manslaughter, she said: "Clearly, making individuals liable for the new offence itself would not be appropriate, given its focus on corporate failings." She added: "On balance, we do not consider that the liability of directors or others working in a company should be targeted and we do not therefore intend to impose individual liability for the new offence either in a direct or contributory way.
