INTENSE PRESSURE is daily routine for many workers but new management standards are set to tackle the problem of sickness absence and staff turnover. With input from a range of businesses, professional bodies, unions and other Government agencies including ACAS, the Health and Safety Executive has developed an approach to the problem, and a tool to help managers gauge stress levels and identify solutions. The management standards are not new regulations, says HSE. But, along with the toolkit, the aim is to help organisations meet a duty to assess the risk of work-related stress and define the characteristics of an organisation where stress is managed effectively. The standards were introduced on National Stress Awareness Day (3 November), organised for the 7th year running by the registered charity International Stress Management Association (ISMA).
