New year, new safety case regime

PREPARING A SAFETY CASE is set to become less bureaucratic as an evaluation of the regime gets underway, writes Jackie Le Poidevin. The review is taking place 10 years after the Offshore Safety Case Regulations were introduced in response to the Piper Alpha disaster. Safety cases are also required in the gas, railway and nuclear industries and under the COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards) regime in the chemicals sector.
