Erratum to 'News on tobacco and public attitudes toward smokefree air policies in the United States'(Health Policy 86 (2008) 42-52)

Subsequent analyses following the publication of Smith et al. (2008), News on tobacco and public attitudes toward smokefree air policies in the United States have revealed that the description provided of the data in this paper was inaccurate. The error in Smith et al. (2008) merits a correction to the description of the data, but does not change either the results presented or the conclusions drawn from them.The error in Smith et al. (2008) is in the description of the media data included the analysis. The paper states that, "we collected newspaper articles about tobacco from every daily, English-language paper (n = 1497) in the United States throughout 2002 and 2003" (p. 45). However, it was subsequently determined that many newspapers (mainly those with low circulation) do not provide circulation data to the Audit Bureau of Circulation, and were therefore not included in this analysis. The media data included in this analysis are accurately described in the revised Table 2 included below
