Life cycle assessment is a useful method to improve heat treatment processes by a process-chain-analysis regarding their effects on environment and also for a comparison of processes. The operating procedure for the gas and salt-bath nitrocarburizing process at two gas plants (3,6 and 6 m3) and at one salt-bath plant is described. Some experiences and possibilities with regard to environmental optimization for both processes are presented and also an ecological comparison of gas and salt-bath nitrocarburizing processes.
