In the fall of 2003, the House of Delegates (HOD) of the American Dietetic Association (ADA) discussed concerns regarding the future education needs for upcoming registered dietitians (RDs) and dietetic technicians (DTs/DTRs) and the future role of dietetic technicians in the dietetics profession. Three primary issues and needs related to education and credentialing were then identified: 1. Current education of entry-level DTRs and RDs will not meet future needs of the profession. 2. Flexibility is required to educate future DTRs and RDs. 3. Current education models for these professionals will not meet demands in the future market. At the conclusion, a recommendation was made to create a task force to design a new plan and timetable for the education of future RDs and DTRs using a "clean slate" approach. In 2004, the Dietetics Education Task Force was appointed; and after this group discussed many reports and focus group summaries, it compiled a final report for HOD consideration entitled Dietetics Education Task Force Report, Recommendations and Future.
