Approximately one in every four adults, about 50 million Americans, have hypertension (HTN). African lericans may develop it earlier in life and are at higher risk than Caucasians; and as all Americans reach middle age, their risk of developing HTN skyrockets. In fact, recent data from the Framingham Heart Study suggest that individuals who are nor-motensive at age 55 have a 90% lifetime risk for developing HTN. Other factors that increase risk for HTN include excess body weight, family history of high blood pressure, and prehypertension (120-139/80-89 mmHg).
