Performance Improvement (PI)

The Committee on the Quality of Health Care in America was formed in 1998 to develop a strategy to improve health care over the next 10 years. In its first report, To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System, it stated that significant errors in health care resulted in an alarming number of deaths each year. This disturbing report reflected only a small story in the health care system and resulted in a call to action to improve the American health care delivery system as a whole, including its quality dimensions. A focus on quality or performance improvement was created—primarily on patient safety issues. Since that time, specific standards for safety have been added to the Joint Commission's performance improvement standards.
