Biological Effects, Sources and Levels of Extremely Low Frequency Electric and Magnetic Fields - The Situation in Greece

The potential health effects of extremely low frequency electric and magnetic fields cause concern to people dwelling or working nearby high voltage power lines. Though the long-term effects of these fields are a topic of on going research there are well-established short-term effects that serve as a basis for setting exposure limits. Common sources of these fields in domestic environments are electrical appliances, internal wiring and return currents in large grounded metallic objects and outside sources mainly connected with the electric power system. The levels of the electric and magnetic fields are to an important extent depending on the practices applied at electrical installations and on the electric power grid construction and operation, which might be quite different from country to country and for this reason, emphasis is given to the situation in Greece and its particularities in relation to other parts of the world.
