The flow and temperature distributions for a column of materially buoyant fluid, referred to as a Cartesian compositional plume, rising in a less buoyant fluid contained between two parallel vertical planes are identified, and the material, heat, and buoyancy fluxes associated with them are discussed. The stability of the system to linear perturbations is investigated. It is found to depend on six dimensionless numbers. The stability is discussed to find that the plume is unstable in the whole parameter space except when the plume is close to a wall and its thickness exceeds a certain value determined by the parameters of the problem, in which case a small region of stability appears in the parameter space.
