Laboratory studies have examined two different vaccine technologies to determine the impact they have on reduction of shedding of Gumboro disease challenge virus. The results are discussed here.Gumboro Disease virus is extremely resistant and even after strict cleaning and disinfecting procedures, it is very likely to persist in the environment and therefore already be present inside the house even before the day-old chicks are released onto the floor. As a consequence, if nothing is done, the likelihood of a Gumboro challenge for most of the flocks is very high. In this situation, it is desirable that a vaccination should not only aim at protecting the chickens from the negative consequences of the infection with a field Gumboro disease virus but also at preventing chickens from the infection itself.
