Cuba - a self-supporting islanad in every sense

The Cuban poultry industry is undergoing major changes, especially since it opened its borders to allow the import of poultry meat from the US. Will this be the end of a unique production system? Cuba is the biggest island in the laribbean, and indeed, one of the iggest in the world. It is also, as we know, an island in the political sense, having a communist-style government and the same President since 1959.In terms of its poultry industry, research, technology and production systems, it is also anisland, in that nowhere else, to the author's knowledge, are these so organized and integrated. And the philosophy underlying these activities is also unique and extremely interesting. The programme would not survive one day in a competitive economy that is part of the world's trading and economic system. However, for better or worse, Cuba is not currently part of that system, and therefore has the privilege of operating according to its own very laudable principles.
