XXII WPC focused on needs of developing countries

The XXII World's Poultry Congress (WPC) was a success. More than 1,600 poultry specialists attended the scientific and social meetings and enjoyed diversity in (poultry) cultures from developed and developing countries. Paultry scientists from aroundthe world attended the XII World's Poultry Congress held from 8-13 June in Istanbul, Turkey. They enjoyed the opportunity to meet colleagues and to make new contacts. Although the congress did not have a theme, one could say that the unofficial them was"meeting developed and less developed poultry industries". The opening's session paved the way and had a couple of excellent presentations on global challenges and benefits related to poultry research and development in the Third World, FAO officer Mr JOtte began by saying that more than a billion people currently live in extreme poverty: these people are powerless, isolated, vulnerable and malnourished A large number live on 1dollar per day and and many on no more than 2dollar per day At the 2000 World Food Summit in Rome, the commitment was made to halve hunger and malnutrition before the year 2015. Indications are however, that progress is not being made at the required pace. The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) predicts even that the number of malnourished children will actually increase by 25 to 30% before 2020 if no major action is taken.
