The fight against various disease agents affecting poultry health and farm profitability is on-going and biosecurity measures are the first and best line of defence in this battle. A comprehensive biosecurity plan properly implemented will not eliminate the possibility of disease entering the farm, but will significantly reduce its probability. The size of the podtry industry has more than doubled in the last 20 years in developed and developing countries. This growth has been supported by improvements in genetics, nutrition, growing methods, processing and marketing. Intensification of poultry production renders the industry more susceptible to threats of poultry diseases, such as Newcastle or Gumboro, and in some cases diseases that might affect human health, such as Avian Influenza and Salmonella; diseases tiiat pose significant economic tlireats to the industry.
