Over the last decade the number of public funded poultry research centres in the developed countries is declining dramatically. Is it good or bad for the industry? The poultry industry, in all its mani-festations, has succeeded and pros-pered becauseof a history of scientific research, technical education and information transfer. This last used to be called "extension" and is now more popularly referred to as "technology transfer. " Regardless of its name, it remains a vital aspect of the R & D exercise.
