In the average food production site, one sees few advanced techniques used to screen pathogens, such as Salmonella, or chemical contaminants, such as residues of sulphonamides. This may change as new and innovative affinity assays become available, offering rapid and cost-effective diagnostic tools to detect these microbial and chemical contaminants. New technologies allow rapid multimicrobial and non-microbial analyte analyses in a single sample in a single run, and with a high sample throughput. One of the interesting technology platforms is the optical surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors, which can be used for the direct and indirect detection of pathogenic micro-organisms in food chains and the environment. Another platform is offered bya bead-fluorescence technology, where small beads are used as solid phase carrier for the ligand, which probes the analyte in the sample.
