Flake filled coatings are not exactly new, dating back to the late T950s, and the principles behind the use of flake fillers, are relatively well known. These relate to the flake format, not necessarily glass flakes, as there are other flake fillers available, Mica, a naturally occurring silicate (phyllosilicate) mineral, possibly pre-dates the use of glass, The crystaline structure of Mica forms layers that can be split or de-laminated into thin sheets. These sheets are chemically inert, dielectric, hydrophilic, insulating and lightweight. Mica is stable when exposed to electricity, tight, moisture and extreme temperatures making it a useful filler material for flake filled coatings.
