Limited scope for attracting foreign funds to the Indian poultry sector

Despite the fact that the country's poultry industry is the fastest growing in the world, India's' potential to attract big-time foreign investment is negligible and will necessitate a host of changes - greater integration, better cost-efficienciesand improvement in distribution, according to a report of Rabobank International. Poultry meat is the fastest growing animal protein in India. It has grown at a compound animal growth rate (CAGR) of 12 percent in the last 11 years and is expected to continue growing at similar rates in the near future. Key factors influencing this growth can be found in a continuous increase in consumption. India has a large and growing population. It has the second largest base of 1.02 billion people in the world, whichis growing at 1.5 percent per annum and is expected to reach 1.29 billion by 2020. Poultry meat takes a major share of the total animal protein, says Rabobank International in a recently published report. In 1991 poultry meat consumption used to be 16percent of the pie and in 2000 its share had grown to 36 percent at the expense of all other meats (Figure 1). Simultaneously the per capita consumption of poultry meat has grown too, from 480 grams in 1990 to about 1.2 kg (1.55 kg excl. the vegetarian population) this year.
