Continuous Surface Mining technique developed from the beginning of the last century especially in the lignite mines of Central and Eastern Europe, Today it is established in mines with un-consolidated material around the world. Systems featuring belt conveyor transport have grown to a class of some 100,000 m~3+t per day. Smaller units are applied in mines for gravel and sand, clay, chalk and various other minerals. Direct dumping systems like conveyor bridges or combination of excavator and direct dumping spreader require special deposit configuration and are compared to the combination featuring bench conveyors a minority, Since continuous transport is energy efficient, systems have been introduced into mines with consolidated material, too. Special loading machines with high cutting forces are applied and/or belt feed is controlled by crusher. Hydraulic systems are mainly limited to dredging operation mining gravel and sand or placers. They have recently been introduced into oil sand mining in Canada. The International Symposium Continuous Mining takes place every three years and is organised by the department of Surface Mining and Drilling at the Aachen University. The event in September 2006 presents in multiple sessions recent developments in all areas of continuous mining.
