Antifouling coatings are applied to ship hulls to prevent the build-up of algae,seaweed and other marine life that lead to increased fuel consumption and loss of speed and manoeuvrability.In recent years antifouling coatings have contained toxic and/or persistent antifouling agents based on heavy metals (eg tributyltin or copper oxide),which may release gradually into the marine environment.
