Rheology-modifiers, surfactants and other control agents play an integral role in the processes associated with the manufacture, film formation and film build of waterborne coatings, as well as the final properties and performance of the dry coating film. Non-ionic associative thickeners (NSATs) represent a class of rheology modifiers which have a thickening mechanism associated with their hydrophobic groups, which can self-associate or interact with other formulation components, including the latex and pigment particles. This paper describes the development of a new family of liquid NSATs based on proprietary hydrophobically-modified poly(acetal- or ketal) polyether chemistry.
