There has been much interest in water-reducible alkyds in recent years, in order to gain the benefits of the alkyd systems in the current low VOC regime. One of the problems faced by water-reducible alkyds is their susceptibility to ester hydrolysis (and hence storage stability). Stress hindrance and anchimeric (neighbouring group) effects play an important role in the mechanism of hydrolysis. Consequently replacement of phthalic anhydride in alkyd formulations and use of vinyl and acrylic monomers have been reported as means of reducing ester hydrolysis.
