Highly weatherable 70% polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) finishes are among the most popular coatings for exterior architectural metal cladding, but when a need arises to repair or change colour, the options for restoration are often limited. This paper presents new studies to adapt PVDF-acrylic hybrid latex technology to the needs of the building restoration market. The PVDF-acrylic hybrid emulsions were made by emulsion polymerisation with a PVDF/acrylic ratio between 70:30 and 50:50 and MFFT ranging from 12-26°C. The actual monomers used were not disclosed. The hybrid dispersions were formulated into TiO2 paints using standard grades of pigments, dispersants and other additives used with acrylic latex products.
