Since the introduction of the tributyltin ban in antifouling paints, the main biocide used has been copper, copper oxide or other copper-based formulations. For ecological reasons, the concentration of copper compounds has been reduced and paints require a booster biocide to provide protection from barnacles and algae (which are relatively insensitive to copper).Paints which use new active compounds against barnacles (such as medetomidine and spiroimidazoline),need booster compounds against algae.
