Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is a powerful diagnostic technique that employs antibodies to identify cellular components. In the past several decades IHC has revolutionized histopathologic diagnosis and has largely supplanted electron microscopy in many laboratories. In general surgical pathology laboratories, IHC is frequently used to classify undifferentiated or poorly differentiated malignant neoplasms, spindle cell neoplasm's and so-called "small round blue cell tumors." It also is used to determine the sites of unknown primary tumors and to subclassify lymphomas and leukemias. In addition to its use in diagnosis, IHC is being used increasingly in the prognostic assessment of tumors. An example is the evaluation of breast carcinoma for HER2eu.
