Scottish hatchery cuts heating costs and reduces environmental footprint with new biomass boiler

At the head of Loch Fyne, on the west coast of Scotland, lies one of Lakeland Smolt s largest hatcheries. It is fed from waters which run together from the Restil Loch situated high up on the "Rest and be Thankful" pass and the Kinglas water. Cairndowhatchery produces 30 million ova, 8 million fry/parr and just over a million smolt, all SO s. This focus on SO production, due mainly to its requirement for clearing out its production for incoming broodstock, means that the hatchery relies heavily on heated water. With increasing production over the past five years and its reliance on steadily increasing amounts of fuel oil for its boilers, Lakeland Smolt took the innovative step of investing in novel alternatives to oil. Linking forestry and aquaculture, Cairndow hatchery installed and commissioned a new state-of-the-art biomass boiler to augment its existing oil -fired ones.
