Fledgling lobster hatchery gets off to good start on Canada's East Coast

A small hatchery program aimed at assisting the flagging lobster fishery around Pictou, Nova Scotia had a good first year operating out of a new wharf and building in the harbour last year. The operation, a project of the Northumberland Fisheries Museum and Heritage Association and the Northumberland Fishermen's Association, comes mainly under the wing of the long-standing Pictou Fisheries Museum. Museum directors Wally Gallant and Keith Munsie said that despite naysayers who said it would take morethan year to have Stage-4 youngsters for release into Northumberland Strait, the hatchery had the tanks filled in the first week of May and the first larvae going into the strait in selected spots June 15.
