It is widely recognized that to increase the sustainable fish supply through aquaculture it will be essential to reduce the wild fish component offish feed. Fishmeal is the major source of protein in aquafeeds and it is estimated that at the present rate of aquaculture growth, fish meal from wild-stock sources will be entirely consumed by the year 2025. However, many "wastes" or "by-products" of farming and industrial subsystems could become alternative protein sources for fish farmers.
