Reuse and Recirculation Technology in Chile Part 2: Recirculation Systems

On the previous issue we described I water re-use technology implemented I at several Chilean salmon hatcheries. Now, we will review briefly how recirculation technology is being slowly introduced into salmon hatchery and production operations and what are the plans for the near future. Currently there are fewer than 10 recirculation facilities for salmon smolt production in Chile out of 143 fresh water facilities, and 54 lake and river sites. In the last 3 to 4 years, a few recirculation facilitieshave been retrofitted to existing flow through systems, or built from scratch. The main reasons for introduce recirculation technology were the ability to increase water temperature (16°C) allow incremental cost, and the reduction of incoming water volume, thus facilitating disinfection against diseases (flavobacteria, IPN, etc) Now, due to new environmental regulations, recirculation technology gives additional benefits by reducing the amount of water released improving effluent quality.
