On March 5, between 300-500 lbs (136-227 kg) of hydrofluoric (HF) acid was released due to a faulty flange on the alkylation unit at Citgo's 163K-b/d Corpus Christi, TX refinery. In order to contain the HF acid, which is known to cause damage to the lungs, eyes, and heart, automatic water cannons released a curtain of water.
