THE COUNTRY'S REFINERS have been exporting record volumes of fuel in an effort to capitalize on energy demand overseas-a strategy that has carried over from the financial crisis that began in late 2008, which hurt US refining margins and cut into fuel production. These moves have pushed up US fuel exports by more than 50% over the past two years, to 2MM b/d, or around 10% of domestic fuel consumption. The majority of the shipments are sent to Europe, South America, and the Caribbean. Mexico is the largest importer of US fuel, at 324K b/d.
