The US Environmental Protection Agency has extended the public comment period for its proposed Tier 3 rule, first entered into the Federal Register on May 21. Originally, the EPA had announced a 23-day comment period to end June 13, during which the general public and affected industry representatives could weigh in on the proposal. The agency has now extended that comment period by an additional 18 days, with all responses on the rule, intended to decrease transportation sector emissions by requiring a 60% reduction in gasoline sulfur content to 10 ppm or less through 2017, due by July 1. If enacted, the rule would necessitate the use of more efficient, high-performing catalytic converters at refineries.
