EPA Extends Deadline For 'Tier Ⅲ' Vehicle Emissions Rule Comments

EPA is extending by 18 days the public comment deadline on its proposed "Tier III" fuel and vehicle emissions rule, which could help address the oil sector's criticism that the agency's previous deadline setting a 23-day comment period violated statutory requirements to give stakeholders at least 30 days to weigh in on the rule. In a notice published in the May 29 Federal Register, EPA says it will extend the comment deadline on Tier III from June 13 to July 1 in "response to requests for an extension," bringing the public comment period to 41 days. The extension falls far short of the 90-day comment period sought by the American Petroleum Institute (API), and EPA has not agreed to the group's request to hold another public hearing on the proposal.
