Volumes of marketed gas production grew by 3.1% worldwide last year to just over 3.3 trillion cubic meters (319 billion cubic feet per day), according to preliminary estimates from Paris-based gas research unit Cedigaz, putting them back on the growth trajectory seen before the 2008-09 economic crisis. The increase was driven partly by booming demand in Asia - especially post-Fukushima Japan - and the Middle East, partly by the growing competitiveness of unconventional gas and prices in North America, and partly by the continued surge in LNG trade, which now accounts for more than 10% of global marketed production.
