Chinese Nuclear Firms Turn to Renewables in Frustration

China's top nuclear companies are suffering - so much so that they are turning to renewables and coal as possible alternatives. Equipment manufacturers further down the supply chain are in an even more precarious position, with domestic Chinese orders for nuclear power-related equipment expected to drop by 70% in the aftermath of Japan's Fukushima crisis, according to China Business News. Beijing suspended approvals for constructing new reactors in March (WGI Apr.17'11,p8). Since then, equipment orders have been postponed and then canceled, the staff from an enterprise which produces reactor forgings recently told WGI sister publication Nuclear Intelligence Weekly (NIW Sep. 12'11).
