CURRENT Dutch Offshore Wind Arguably Competitive With Gas Newbuilds

Offshore wind set a new milestone earlier this month, with Denmark's Dong Energy winning a competitive tender to build 700 megawatts of near-shore capacity at two sites off the Dutch coast — Borssele 1 and 2 — for ?72.70 per megawatt hour ($80/ MWh). The subsidy agreement with the Dutch government, under its much-lauded SDE+ scheme, is for 15 years and unlike UK agreements is not inflation index-linked. The grid kit, cables, transformers and substations add another ?14/MWh or so, bringing the total to roughly ?87/MWh. Dong Energy has five years to start generating electricity from Borssele 1 and 2.
