India's Reliance Industries is hoping that BP's purchase last month of a 30% stake in 23 of its offshore blocks, including the recently troubled giant KG-D6, will not only flip its sagging upstream fortunes, but also bolster what are some very ambitious gas-marketing plans. Reliance had once aimed to overtake state Gail India to become India's biggest gas supplier. However, the effort came unstuck due to a combination of misreading of geology at KG-D6 and a family feud that led the government to impose fixed pricing and state designation of customers at the field (WGI May 26,p1).
