Japan Claims World Drilling First

Japan claimed a world first this month, when it began preparatory drilling for methane hydrates in an ambitious bid to bolster its energy security by cutting dependence on gas imports. The tests, off the coast of south-central Japan, are being conducted by Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corp. (Jogmec), which tells WGI it will be the "first production test ever to take out the methane from methane hydrate under the seafloor."
