US, China Firms Partner in No Emission Coai-to-Liquids Effort

Capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted by power plants, refineries and other industrial plants and sequestering it underground in facilities of the type being tested in the US, Canada, North Sea and elsewhere are "non-starters" in China because of the country's frequent seismic activity, says Accelergy's Chief Technology Officer Rocco Fiato. Yet China is concerned about controlling greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while still using coal - its most abundant and least expensive hydrocarbon resource - to produce electricity and even transportation fuels (WGI Oct. 12'11,p9).
