The expectation that shale gas will constitute a progressively larger and larger part of North American gas supply has become industry orthodoxy of late. Certainly, US output, which was on a bumpy downward path through the early years of the last decade, started rising briskly again in 2006-08 as the commercialization of technology allowed broader development of this once-challenging unconventional source, and money and rigs are pouring into shale plays (WGI Jan.20,p8).
