Eni's gas sales volume in Italy plunged by nearly 18% in the fourth quarter and by almost 6% for 2008 as a whole, as industrial demand in the country imploded. Italy's overall gas consumption was static at 84.9 billion cubic meters (8.2 billion cubic feet per day) in each of the past two years, but Eni's share fell to 62% (52.9 Bcm) last year, from 66% (56.1 Bcm) in 2007, and its Italian sales collapsed last quarter to only 13.3 Bcm (5.1 Bcf/d).
