Having secured a key consent from Ireland's Planning Board, Shannon LNG — wholly owned by Hess LNG, now majority-owned by Hess with US consultancy Poten as a partner — plans to start construction next year with a view to the terminal's start-up in late 2012, Hess LNG chief Gordon Shearer tells WGI. Initial capacity at the estimated EUR500 million (785 million) terminal would be only around 1 billion cubic meters per year (100 million cubic feet per day), increasing to 3 Bcm/yr after a three- to four-year ramp-up, Shearer said. Rather than serving as a regional entrepot, he expects the terminal to make a direct contribution to Ireland's gas supply security: "It's a market that is at a premium to the UK, and the project will take vessels up to Q-Max size," which is 260,000 cubic meters.
