Early entry into force of the Paris climate agreement looks more likely after the US and China ratified the landmark accord over the weekend, dispelling fears that climate issues might drop down the global political agenda (WGI Dec. 16'15). The move, on the eve of a G20 meeting in Hangzhou, China, increases the number of countries to have ratified the deal to 26, accounting for 39% of global greenhouse gas emissions. To come into force, the accord has to be ratified by at least 55 countries accounting for an estimated 55% of emissions, and Beijing and Washington are urging others to follow.
