After two years of negotiations, Kazakhstan and a consortium led by BG and Eni have settled a dispute over the giant Karachaganak field, giving the state a 10% stake and paving the way for a third new development phase to more than double gas production to 38 billion cubic meters per year (3.7 billion cubic feet per day).The deal is a significant breakthrough for the Central Asian republic, which hasjust marked 20 years of independence from the Soviet Union, and the big question now is what will happen to the extra gas to be produced from the onshore field in northwestern Kazakhstan, near the Russian border.
