Gas Turbines in Alternative Fuel Applications: A resourceful option for growing Asian power markets

In the beginning of the third millenium, the majority of Asian economies are starting to recover from the 1997 financial crisis. The increased demand for energy across the region is a fair indicator that economic growth will continue, further fueling a revival of the Asian power market in this decade. However, fuel availability will play a major role in the future expansion of the energy supply across the region. Although a number of Asian countries, including China and India, are embarking on gigantic gas programs, including LNG and pipeline gas infrastructures, this 'king energy' will not be in position to fulfill the whole Asian power demand, neither immediately nor everywhere. Therefore, with the volatility of gas oil prices and the tensions expected in the oil sector, alternative power generation concepts, including those resorting to renewable and residual energies, are called upon to play a non negligible part in the supply of electricity.
